MYOG: Synthetic Top Quilt

Quilt

Outer- 20 Denier White Ripstop Nylon

Inner- 10 Denier Black Membrane Nylon Taffeta

Insulation- 2.5oz Climashield Apex

Made to be modular and light. Wider than average construction, shock-cord drawstrings around the footbox and neck hem, as well as footbox zipper, snaps, and shock-cord pad straps allow it to be used standalone during summer outings or an addon to a meager winter sleep system. Black inner allows it to absorb heat from the sun more efficiently when needed to dry. Was made for an upcoming excursion in mind, needed more insulation and a barrier to protect my down bag from condensation over the course of a week where drying isn’t a good use of time.

The construction process is kind of simple. Most of your difficulty will be dealing with the slick fabrics. With a synthetic quilt you can mess up way more in the construction without it reducing functionality since the design is overall very simple and effective. I guess some tips would be testing thread tension setting on scrap fabrics (needs to be raised typically). Taping the underneath of the presser foot facing towards you so the insulation doesn't get stuck on the foot helps significantly, wrapping/tissue paper works well when sewing together the panels. I dont have one but consider using a walking foot with this project. It took me about 4-5 hours from start to finish. Below are some resources that can help you start yours.
